A brazed plate heat exchanger is made up of several types of corrugated plates that must be stacked in a predefined, controlled sequence. The infeed pallets generally hold up to 4 different plate types, whose arrangement varies according to the model in production. A sequence or orientation error compromises the thermal performance of the entire exchanger and only shows up after furnace brazing, when the product can no longer be recovered.

The Sytec robotic cell for heat exchanger assembly solves this problem at the root.

Two articulated robots pick up the plates in the programmed sequence and position them on inclined centering and inspection stations. The inspection systems verify plate consistency, the corrugation configuration, the external and internal diameters of the fluid-passage holes, the presence of the internally welded copper sheet and any detachment of the weld points. Only conforming plates move on to the forming station. Non-conforming plates are unloaded separately.

The forming station, automatically managed on the vertical axis, stacks the plates onto the base, controlling horizontal centering and the vertical pressing of the forming pack at a programmed frequency. This plate-stacking machine ensures the vertical straightness of the finished product. Once forming is complete, the exchanger is transferred onto motorized chain conveyors and made available to the operator for the cover assembly before the subsequent stages.

The system handles different models in base dimensions, plate sequence and plate count. The batch sequence is fully manageable from the control system.

The system is available in two configurations, Small and Medium-Large, to cover the entire size range of corrugated plates. In both configurations, the system manages batch production with model changeover fully automated by the control system. The articulated industrial robots integrated by Sytec pick up the plates in the programmed sequence with constant speed and precision. The entire system requires only one indirect operator and provides 60 minutes of working autonomy before the pallets are reloaded.

The system is available in a Small configuration (plates 70-300 mm, up to 2 types for mixing) and Medium-Large (plates 300-1,000 mm, up to 4 types for mixing, pack height up to 1,000 mm, capacity up to 700 plates/hour). Integrated quality controls

Every plate is checked before stacking. The inspection systems verify: plate/interlayer/pallet identification, corrugation type, presence and diameter of internal holes, presence and diameter of external holes, presence of the copper sheet and plate weight. Non-conforming plates are unloaded automatically. The cell is managed by a PLC-based automation system connected directly to all integrated equipment. The operator interface consists of a PC monitor for programming and for receiving data from the company system, with bidirectional exchange of data on work orders, production schedules and results.

From plate stacking to the brazing furnace: the complete heat exchanger cycle

Upstream, it connects to the feeding and storage systems for the corrugated plates, while downstream the stacked and pressed exchanger is transferred on motorized chain conveyors toward the furnace brazing stage and then to the testing systems for leak and pressure tests.
